Decommissioned MBTA Sign: BACK BAY STATION; SOUTH END (Orange Line) 02

This is an authentic decommissioned MBTA Orange Line station sign removed from Back Bay Station in 2026. On the upper portion, sign reads BACK BAY STATION in white text on an orange background. On the lower portion, sign reads SOUTH END in black text on a white background.

Sign weighs approximately 30 pounds.

Sign measures 98" long x 15" high x 1.5" thick at the edges.

Finish glossy porcelain enamel paint on a solid piece of formed steel.

The MBTA took over the New Haven Railroad's Back Bay Station in 1983. The T approved the renaming of Back Bay Station to Back Bay / South End in 1985. Sign most likely dates from the late 1980s, when the Orange Line opened along the recently completed Southwest Corridor in 1987.
